Dental Bridges

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a prosthetic device that is used to replace one or more missing teeth by bridging the gap between adjacent teeth or dental implants—thus restoring function and esthetics. A dental bridge is made up of several components. First, two or more crowns are needed to cover your natural teeth that are on either side of the gap. These are referred to as abutment teeth. The actual ‘bridge’ consists of one or more artificial porcelain teeth (called pontics) that are anchored to dental crowns or abutment teeth. Dental bridges are custom-made to match the color and shape of your natural teeth.

Dental Bridge Process

Step 1 – Initial Consultation: Dr. Kuyunov will discuss your medical history and conduct a comprehensive examination of your oral health. X-rays of your jaw will be taken. He will then assess the need for this type of restorative dental treatment to replace your missing teeth. If you have any other dental issues, or you need a dental implant to anchor the bridge, you will need more visits with Dr. Kuyunov before your bridge is placed.

Step 2 – Preparation of Abutment Teeth: A dental bridge needs to be supported by adjacent teeth called abutment teeth, which will need to have dental crowns placed on them. To prepare these abutment teeth, Dr. Kuyunov will remove a small amount of dental enamel from each one so that the dental crowns and bridge can fit comfortably.

Step 3 – Impressions and Temporary Bridge: Dr. Kuyunov will then take impressions of your teeth, which will be used to create your custom-fit dental bridge. These impressions are sent to the lab to begin fabrication of your bridge. The bridge will be crafted to match the color, size, and shape of your existing teeth to ensure a natural and seamless look. While your bridge is being made, you will be provided with a temporary bridge to protect the now exposed abutment teeth, preserve chewing function, and maintain a natural appearance.

Step 4 – Permanent Bridge Fitting: Dr. Kuyunov will make one final check to ensure that your new bridge feels comfortable, is aligned correctly, and functions properly. Any final adjustments will be made to ensure that your bridge feels comfortable.

Step 5 – Cementing the Bridge: When the perfect fit is achieved and you are satisfied with the way it looks, your bridge will be bonded in place. First, the abutment teeth will be coated with a layer of dental cement. Then the bridge will be carefully positioned and any excess cement removed.

Who is a good candidate for a dental bridge?

You may want to consider getting a dental bridge if you are:

  • Missing one or more teeth and the teeth on either side of the gap are strong and healthy.

  • Concerned about cost since an alternative solution like a dental implant or an implant-supported bridge may not be in your budget.

  • Wanting to avoid surgery which would be involved if you choose an alternative tooth replacement involving dental implants.

  • Looking for a relatively quick solution to replace missing teeth since the entire dental bridge process will take only a few weeks to a month at the most to complete.

  • You are not good candidate for dental implants or implant-supported bridges for medical or other reasons.

  • Gum Protection: A dental bridges protects your gums from damage due to eating crunchy or sharp foods that may pierce the soft tissue where teeth are missing.

  • Maintains Teeth Integrity: Dental bridges can protect your teeth's alignment by keeping the rest of your natural teeth from shifting or weakening.

  • Fixed Solution: A dental bridge is a fixed, non-removable solution. You won't need to take them out when you brush your teeth.
