What is a dental crown?

A dental crown, (also known as an esthetic crown), is like a ‘cap’ that is used to restore strength, function, and esthetics to the remains of a tooth that has been damaged, cracked, or decayed. A dental crown also protects a damaged tooth from infection and further breakdown. Dental crowns are made from porcelain, high strength esthetic ceramics,  or other materials. Dental Crown Process

Step 1 – Consultation: Dr. Kuyunov will examine the tooth that needs the crown. X-rays may be taken to gain a full understanding of the situation. If he determines that a dental crown is the best solution for your situation, he will then prepare your tooth to receive your crown.

Step 2 – Preparation, Impressions, Temporary Bridge:

First, the natural tooth and gum surrounding it will be numbed. Then, any decay and old fillings are removed and the tooth will be built up with a core material. The tooth receiving the crown is shaped along the chewing surface and its sides to make room for the crown to fit on top. A putty-like material is then used to make an impression of your tooth which will be used to create your custom-fit dental crown. These impressions are sent to the lab to begin fabrication of your crown, which will be crafted to match the color, size, and shape of your existing teeth.

While your dental crown is being made, you will be fitted with a temporary crown to prevent sensitivity and further damage, as well as to provide esthetics and a biting surface. Here are a few tips for caring for your temporary crown properly:

  • As much as possible, chew your food on the other side of your mouth from your temporary crown.

  • Avoid eating sticky or hard-to-chew foods.

  • When flossing, slide the floss rather than lift it from between the crowned tooth on either side.

 

Step 3 – Permanent Crown Fitting, Cementing: When your permanent crown returns from the lab, Dr. Kuyunov will test it to learn if it fits properly and that the alignment and bite are correct. Minor adjustments may be made to ensure that your crown fits comfortably. When you are satisfied with the way it feels and looks, he will bond your crown in place using dental cement.

Step 4 – Final Check:  Dr. Kuyunov will make one final check to ensure that your new dental crown feels comfortable, is aligned correctly, and functions properly. Any final adjustments will be made to ensure that your crown feels comfortable.
